1 · Why we built it
Pupils rarely fall behind because they can't do it.
We spend a lot of time listening to teachers and to the challenges facing schools. One thing came up again and again, especially in the older year groups: the gap between the highest and lowest attainers is wide, and often growing, which makes it very hard to meet the needs of a whole class at once.
Groundwork Maths is our response. It is a catch-up and intervention programme, because pupils rarely fall behind in maths because they can't do it. They fall behind because a gap opened up early and never got addressed. Groundwork Maths finds that gap and closes it, whatever the pupil's age, and it is made to be delivered by teaching assistants and non-specialists in short sessions.

Rethink Maths is on a mission to change the way the world sees and learns maths, on a global scale. That work is built around five missions, and Groundwork Maths contributes to four of them.
Confidence
Tackling maths anxiety by building a positive mindset. Groundwork Maths works in small, achievable steps, so pupils experience success and start to see themselves as someone who can do maths.
Inclusion
Maths for every learner. Groundwork Maths is gap-led, not age-led, so it meets every pupil where they are, and it is designed to support the needs of pupils with SEND.
Teaching
Better teaching, not just better resources. We give teaching assistants and non-specialists high-quality resources and training, with a real focus on the teaching that happens in each session, so every session makes a difference.
